On the short side, the sarcophagus bears the crest of the aristocratic Vagnone family, while on the other there is a funerary inscription, which can be translated as follows: “The bones of Cavalier Filippo Vagnone, who died in the yYear of our Lord 1499, 16 October. If you of posterity wish to know my merits and the offices of my life, read my pleasures in their entirety; I was a noble, ambassador, knight, prefect of the tribunal, praetorian, poet. [I am] now but a brief shadow. Adieu. Laid by Filippo di Valperga, Count and Knight, in blessed memory of his father-in-law.” On the sides there are two carved mythological subjects: Apollo with the Muses and Stories of Perseus.
