Tomb of Napoleon

François GEORGIN and PELLERIN19th century

Musée Bertrand
Châteauroux, France

Napoleon’s body rested in his tomb in Saint Helena for nearly 20 years, before embarking on his final journey to Paris in 1840. A funerary monument is depicted here, slightly different from the funeral headstone currently in place.
This print from the Pellerin printing works serves as a witness to this tomb which appears in the center of the image, veiled in a black cloth.
Along with the eagle and the crown, lower down are the names of some battles which surmount a coat of arms made up of a crossed palm and sword, on which rests a decorated laurel wreath.
As usual in these scenes from Saint Helena, members of the Bertrand family are featured, here decorating the tomb with flowers.
