  • Viewing Notes: A contemporary of Piranesi, Legeay studied at the Ecole des Arts in Paris prior to winning the Prix de Rome in 1732. He worked closely with the Italian artist and developed a distinctive label for those who explored the relationship between architecture and painting - the architect-peintures, characterized by intricate compositions of imaginary architectural settings, often dominated by massive vase forms or ruined temples overwhelmed by vegetation.
