This bowl has a dark glaze on the outside and a white glaze on the inside. The character “zhen,” meaning precious, is incised on the side. According to the Kangxi Dictionary, the standard Chinese dictionary during the 18th and 19th centuries, the zhen character is composed of a wuji element and a jade radical. According to Yupian, a Chinese dictionary edited by Gu Yewang, the character is a variant form of zhen, which also means precious.
