Torso del Belvedere (Copia di)

Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna

Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna
Bologna, Italy

Plaster cast from a marble original by Apollonius of Athens from the mid-1st century BC, preserved in the Vatican Museums. The original depicts Filottete, the ailing hero abandoned in Lemnos waiting for the comrades to return. A cast of the torso would enter the Clementine Academy in 1727, thanks to the efforts of General Marsili. From at least 1811, according to the documents found so far, there would be a second cast: the first is included among the works owned by the city of Bologna, the second among the materials purchased by the Royal Academy from the moment of its establishment. Two copies are also documented at the end of the nineteenth century.
