This highly popular work corresponds to the artistic path taken by Aguayo during his Zaragonese era. This artistic phase is characterized by the application of tenets of abstraction, being influenced by the work of Paul Klee.
Following a phase of transition and coexistence between new tenets of abstraction and the continued existence of figurative expressionist and surrealist references (1948–1949), in 1950 Fermín Aguayo completely dove into abstraction and pictorial construction. It involved canvases constructed with black lines which divide the pictorial space full of chromatic contrasts. Tortilla Flat is a clear example of this era.
