Tortuguero National Park is located within the larger Tortuguero Conservation Area in Costa Rica which also includes a wetland area protected under the Ramsar Convention. The park is home to an abundance of species including more than 300 bird species, 111 species of reptiles including three species of marine turtles, and 13 of Costa Rica’s 16 endangered species including jaguars, tapirs, ocelots, river otters and manatees. The park is visited by 50 000 tourists annually, is particularly known for its turtles, and is the largest Atlantic Green Sea Turtle preserve in the world.
