The Tower of London has been open to paying visitors since at least the 17th Century. Following a campaign in the 1830s to open up national monuments to the wider public, general admission was set at one shilling, with separate tickets required to visit the Jewel House and the Armouries. This system continued until after the Second World War.

This isometric drawing, made in the 1930s, features a design for an automated ticket vending machine.
