Towing artillery

The oil on canvas, signed on the bottom right by Giovanni Fattori, shows an infinite countryside landscape unrolling under a cloudy sky. Two pairs of cavalrymen advance on the horizon, while in the foreground soldiers and restless horses are involved in pulling the artillery. The Risorgimento theme, dear to the artist, is purified of any reference to an episode that really happened: the meaning of the scene is brought to an exclusively human level, which is catalyzed on the white mantle of the two horses that are lightly trotting away.
