The first toy stoves appeared in the 1840s, modeled after the full-sized stoves found in American kitchens at the time. Not only did toy stoves look like their fully functioning, adult-sized counterparts, but they used the same technology as well. Consequently, unlike safer, modern toy ovens, such as the light bulb-powered Easy-Bake Oven, these early stoves had many of the same hazards of coal-burning or wood-burning stoves, such as open flames and hot stovetops. This sheet metal stove, for instance, has two pull out drawers containing double-wick alcohol burners that, when lit, heated the stove and oven.
