In 1958 Nabisco Shredded Wheat added a premium to packages of the breakfast food. Many a youngster, at mid-20th century, probably couldn't afford a real metal Lionel train set. So Nabisco partnered with Lionel to produce punch-out paper locomotives for children to assemble and enjoy. Premiums such as this undoubtedly prompted better sales for Nabisco and helped spread the fame of Lionel trains as well.
