Inspired by a private investigator who lost his hands in an teenage accident, the Ideal Toy company in 1976 introduced J. J. Armes, a successful private detective with no hands. J. J., made of vinyl, stood 10-inches tall with Captain Actionesque articulation. He came dressed in pants, a sweater, a vest marked JJ, and boots. Instead of hands, the figure had clever accessories that let him use his "hands" as tools and weapons. These pieces were stored in a red briefcase and included suction cups for climbing walls, magnets for hanging onto steel structures, machetes to cut his way out of tough situations, a pair of false hands for undercover roles, hooks that converted to pistols, and a pair of spring loaded hooks. The J. J. Armes Mobile Investigation Unit made the private detective even more nimble and successful at solving the crime and catching the criminal.
