Trade sign

The Golden Fleece - This gilded sheep was one of numerous trade-signs which hung above the doorways of Norwich businesses to identify the goods being made or sold. Such signs helped people find their way around the city, and described where buildings were loated. Visitors would be directed to stop 'at the sign of the Golden Fleece'. This sign was used by Elan Skoyles, outfitters and hatters, of Davy Place, and is a replica of an older sign which once hung on Gentleman's Walk in the market-place. The golden fleece symbolises the fabulous wealth that wool and cloth brought to Norwich. It was the emblem of the Woolcombers, and possibly once formed part of the Woolcombers' paegants which were known to have been held in the city.
