The Mijus live in long stilted houses, made up of bamboo, wood, and leaves, which is a typical cultural feature of their society. They live in extended families, who stay together in the same house connected by a long common corridor, and a separate hearth for each family unit. The centrality of the hearths inside their houses defines their way of life. Even today, when modern equipments and gadgets have found their way into the present-day kitchens, the Mijus continue to have active hearths that constitute a cardinal element of their culture.
