The Khamptis are known for their weaving skills, and weave their own clothes. They use a simple handloom with a paddle. The looms are found in the courtyards of their houses.The green and white chequerred pattern is a typical design of Khampti textile and is mainly worn as a wrap-around skirt or lungi by men.

  • About the craft: The Khampti tribe also known as Tai Khampti migrated from erstwhile Burma to eastern Arunachal in mid 1700s and settled in the region of the Tengapani river basin in Namsai. The word ‘Khampti’ means ‘a land full of gold’. They are descendants of speakers of a common Tai language. The Tai-Khampti are followers of Theravada Buddhism.
