Toy trains first appeared in the United States in the 1850s, not long after the first operating railroads first appeared on the American landscape. Toy makers produced the first trains of tin or cast iron. Later toy trains were made of other medals; in the middle and late 20th century, manufacturers offered detailed trains molded in plastic. Children pushed or pulled the earliest toy trains on the floor. Stream-powered trains sets complete with tracks to run on followed. In the 20th century, manufacturers like Lionel perfected the electric-powered train system, which remains popular to this day, especially among adult toy train enthusiasts.
