If you look closely, one can see that the crates are labeled "JOINT" for The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. Shown here are William Bein (in uniform), JDC Director for Poland, J.G. Barski, Secretary General of JDC Poland, and Herbert Sussman (hatless), President of United Galician Jews of America. JDC reopened its Warsaw office in July 1945. In the postwar period, JDC played a major role in Poland, shipping vital supplies to the needy, promoting economic activity, and supporting a network of schools, children’s homes, hospitals, and Jewish communal institutions.
