The elevated viewpoint accentuates the expanse of the scene, which stretches as far as the eye can see to the horizon where the sky and sea blend into each other in a sultry atmosphere. The silhouettes of the snow-white hips of salt mirror themselves on the shining water surface. In the lower part of the painting, the withering brown brushwood is rendered by applying the colour with a brush handle that makes the white canvas shine through in some spots. By doing so Antonino Leto created a distinct stylistic and consequently emotional contrast between the naturalistic image in the foreground and the sea and sky in the background.
