Trees, Water, Swan

Edward Rudge (1778-1841) painted
many views of Coventry between 1807 and 1820. Rudge was inventive in a number
of ways, using bright colours and in later works employing a looser painting
technique. In this watercolour, the light bursts through the clouds and onto
the castle. The contrast of lighter and darker areas highlights the mood of the
setting.
