Trench art. Container. The container is shaped like a small artillery shell. It is a 37 millimeter shell of the type used by both US and French Armies during World War I. This type of shell was used with a small (machine gun sized) cannon often mounted on wheels to facilitate movement. Most commonly used shell for Trench Art.
a. Body - body of the container is cylindrical in shape and hollow and made from a brass colored artillery shell. The side of the body has an engraved design of a double cross surrounded by flags and emblems. Below the design are the words "Honneur Patrie".
b. Head - Head of the container is cylindrical in shape. c. Tip - with a rounded tip. Made of a dark gray banded metal the tip inserts into (.016b head). Cone shaped with point cut off. Has a small image of an anchor engraved into it and L 647 16.
Vase, trench art. Brass colored metal vase made of an artillery shell from World War I. The base of the vase has an artillery stamp on the underside. The sides of the shell are hammered brass with a raised smooth design of ivy leaves. The side of the vase reads "Craonne 1917". The mouth of the vase is fluted.
