August Jernberg studied at the Academy in Stockholm. Then he spent the years 1847-1854 in Paris, where he spent six months as a student of Couture. 1854 he went to Düsseldorf, where he, with the exception of several trips to France, Holland and Sweden, lived until his death. Predominantly Jernberg painted portraits, genre pictures and still lifes, but he has also done some landscapes.
The painting depicts a group of people in front of Rembrandt's famous painting "The Night Watch" at Treppenhuis, Holland.
