Martin Carlin was a leading ébéniste (maker of veneered case furniture) working in the Louis XVI style. He was best known for his furniture decorated with Sèvres porcelain plaques, such as this piece, which he began to make in 1765. The table also demonstrates his masterful ability to apply the neoclassical style, with classical foliage motifs and gilded mounts.
