Vasari, in the second edition of the Lives (1568), states that the three panels, begun in 1464, were found in the Marquis' chapel of the castle of Mantua where the painter had gone in 1460, accepting the invitation by Marquis Ludovico Gonzaga, and where he lived until his death. He worked until the end of his days on paintings, many of which were commissioned by Isabella d'Este.
