Jan Provoostc. 1520 - 1525

Den Haag, Netherlands

In the centre of this triptych is the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus. The child is sitting on a gold brocade cushion, lovingly supported by his mother. Behind them is a landscape with a Flemish town. The left wing depicts John the Evangelist and the right wing Mary Magdalene.

The triptych was painted by the Flemish artist Jan Provoost. He also painted the decorations on the frame, which are reminiscent of the woodcuts by the German artist Albrecht Dürer.
