Triumph of Love and Triumph of Chastity

These two (Triumph of Love and Triumph of Chastity) and the other two panels (Triumph of Time and Triumph of Eternity) must originally have been espaliers or wall panels that served as backs of furniture and as insulation from the cold and damp walls. These paintings were inspired by Francesco Petrarch's homonymous poems and, in particular, the representation of the Triumph of Love was inspired by the cart of Cupid set up in the streets of Florence in 1459 for the tournament held in honour of Pope Pius II and sponsored by the young Lorenzo de' Medici.
The second panel shows the Chastity personified by a young woman with a palm.
