Even in the 1980s, large-scale computer systems were still operated by punched cards in combination with a special programming language (JCL).
The punch card influenced the technical development as well as the format development of the programming languages. The punch card was standardized to 80 columns, 12 holes could be punched per line. Further holes allowed upper and lower case as well as special characters, the data volume of a punch card was 80 bytes.
