It was built between 106-109 at the will of Trajan Emperor for celebrating the victory over the alliance made by the Dacian king Decebal with the Burs and the Sarmatians in 102. There were displayed 54 metopae, telling the story of the fight, 48 of them being exhibited at the museum nearby.
