Narcissus is a genus of perennial bulbs that are among the first to emerge in late winter into early May. Their clump forming habit often makes them ideal for naturalizing into lawns, massing under trees or planting in front of shrubbery. All daffodils share long, blade-like foliage but differ greatly in flower shape. There are currently 13 divisions to classify cultivars and garden hybrids. In general, six petals surround a cup-shaped feature and bloom solitarily or in clusters. Seeds are usually fertile so dead heading is recommended and foliage should turn yellow before cutting back. Narcissus performs best with well-drained, deep, fertile soil in full sun.
