Trumpet-necked storage jar

British Museum

British Museum
London, United Kingdom

This large jar has a rounded base which was pushed into the ground during use. It is decorated with a cord-pattern relief moulding at the join of the neck, demonstrating the persistence of Jōmon decorative effects into the Yayoi period. It also has the distinctive combed wave patterns of the Yayoi period around the outside of the rim and an impressive natural ash glaze.
