The mask itself is painted black, the mouth and eye sockets red. Padded, appliquéd pieces of leather emphasize the cheeks while light and dark types of fur and four goat horns communicate the animalic and demonic nature of this key figure in Lötschental carnival customs. Young men disguised as Tschäggätä roam through the villages from Candlemas (February 2) to Ash Wednesday.
