Liriodendron tulipifera (tulip tree) is a fast growing, large, upright deciduous tree with a rounded, open habit. Large tulip shaped orange and green flowers have a light scent and generally bloom high up on the tree where they are rarely seen. These flowers attract hummingbirds and honey bees, the latter of which make particularly tasty honey from the nectar. Mature specimens can reach astonishing heights with very straight central leaders and are typically known as the 'tallest trees east of the Mississippi River'. The wood is used for furniture and other lumber products, but branches can be weak and may easily break & fall during high winds or with snow load. Avoid plantings near parking lots. L. tulipifera performs well as a shade tree or specimen tree.
