Headgear was important throughout India, especially among men, where it denoted status, caste, age and other affliations. It took a range of fabrics and forms, from simple soft single toned caps moulded to the shape of the wearer's head to elaborate hats made of metal threads and bejewelled head covering made of lustrous silk. This piece is a lilac coloured turban with narrow red and gold border, worked in a simple plain weave.
