Turban-helmet, Ottoman workmanship, circa 1560 General view

Paris, France

Made up of a skull forged from a single piece to which a mobile nose piece is attached, this magnificent turban-helmet is decorated with twisted grooves, reminiscent of the moving folds of the fabric. It is also topped with an octahedron crest block acting as a support for an appendage to the contour in the shape of an inverted cone.
Above the arched openings for the eyes and the vervelles, which are small, pierced rivets that allow for an aventail to be attached, there is a reinforcement attached to the base of the skull. The label (Tamgha) of the arsenal of Istanbul is stamped on the right-hand side of the nose piece. Finally, a fine chain of floral motifs and engraved Arabic inscriptions that can be translated as "for you, our lord, eternity," covers the whole piece.
