Turkey Pasture in Kentucky

The late afternoon sun casts its dreamy veil across this scene of slave labor in the antebellum South. George Fuller based Turkey Pasture in Kentucky on his travels through this region in the 1850s, returning to these memories later in his career. Thick layers of paint and loose brushwork reveal his studies in France and his interest in contemporary ideas about landscape painting. Yet the blurring of details may also suggest the barefoot girl’s own ability to dream of a world beyond these fields.
