The Turkwel River at the Turkana Basin at dusk, site of the performance RE-LIVE, The Rift Valley, Northern Kenya

Turkana landscapes bear witness to the drama of early interactions between humans and their planet, the ever-evolving iterations of this defining relationship. The hills of Turkana are part of the Great Rift Valley and trace the changing contours of the rift. The movement of the tectonic plates abruptly changes the depth of the lakes, creates new hills and chasms. Changes in the climate and human habitat have profoundly affected the peoples and cultures of the Rift. This impact was as real for the early humans as it is for the peoples of the Rift Valley today. The layers of sediment become an archive and a natural museum preserving the records of these interactions.
