This figure belongs to a group of archaic objects that have been found in caves or along streams on the island of Borneo. A Modang chief who saw the sculpture described it with the word dewa, meaning "of or related to the gods" or "from the gods." The vertical beam above the head suggests that the sculpture was suspended from an architectural structure, possibly a mausoleum.
