Deberitz was a Norwegian painter who was regarded as a neo-impressionist. He was a pupil of Henri Matisse during his stay with him in Paris. He was also the one to fame the famous painter Edvard Munch, who had rented lodgings with the family during the summers of 1885 and 1886. Deberitz lent painting materials to the boy and encouraged his artistic efforts.
