Twin Speech

Tibor Papp (together with Pál Nagy) is one of the founders of the Hungarian journal entitled Magyar Műhely (Hungarian Workshop), which was launched in Paris in 1962 by young intellectuals emigrating to Western-Europe after the repression of the Hungarian revolution and war of 1956. The two of them has learnt the printer profession and the journal’s own printing house was formed, which signals their typographical interest, the formal characteristics of the poems coming into the limelight. With the appearance of the avant-garde trends the boundary between fine arts and literature became permeable. As far as visual poetry is concerned the starting point of Magyar Műhely is literature, as far as language is concerned the authors of the journal emphasize signs instead of significance. The text of Twin Speech is built of two layers, which are joint by recurring words and motifs. On the one hand an erotic encounter appears, on the other hand poetic roles come into view. The typographical and graphic signs and the figures are the signs of technical civilisation and engineering accuracy, which are in opposition with the billowy layout of words and exclamation and question marks referring to strong emotional load. The lyrical self endeavours to get acquainted with the lover and the true nature of things.

A Magyar Műhely folyóirat egyik alapító szerkesztője (Nagy Pállal együtt); a lapot az 1956-os magyar forradalom leverése után Nyugat-Európába emigrált fiatal értelmiségiek 1962 májusában indították el Párizsban. Mindketten kitanulták a nyomdász mesterséget, s létrejött a folyóirat saját nyomdája: ez tipográfiai érdeklődésüket, a vers formai jegyeinek előtérbe kerülését jelzi. Az avantgárd irányzatok megjelenésével a képzőművészet és az irodalom közötti határ átjárhatóvá vált. A vizuális költészet terén a műhelyesek kiindulópontja az irodalom, a nyelv vonatkozásában nem a jelentést, hanem a jelszerűséget hangoztatják. A Páros beszéd szövege több rétegből tevődik össze, melyeket a visszatérő szavak, motívumok kapcsolnak össze: egyrészt egy szerelmi légyott sejlik fel, másrészt költői szereplehetőségek villannak fel. A tipográfiai és grafikai jelek, ábrák a technikai civilizáció, a mértani pontosság jelzői, oppozícióban állnak az erős indulati töltésre utaló felkiáltó- és kérdőjelekkel, bizonyos szavak hullámzó tördelésével. A lírai alany egyfajta kísérletet tesz a szerető és a dolgok valódi természetének megismerésére.
