The two lateral canvas of the ceiling of the Gallery, carried out by Giovanni da San Giovanni between 1615 and 1616, shows two angels, for each canvas, that hold four laurel wreaths, symbols of the arts in which Michelangelo had distinguished himself. At first, in this panel were supposed to place three wreaths, representing Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, later on it was decided to add a fourth to celebrate also the poet.
