Two Horsemen near a Fountain

Philips Wouwerman1650-52

Dulwich Picture Gallery

Dulwich Picture Gallery
London, United Kingdom

This picture has been considered a companion piece to Halt of Cavaliers at an Inn (DPG77), due to their similar size and subject matter. However, the use of the 'PHILS. W' signature indicates that this picture was produced after 1646, after the other painting.

Stylistically this is a transitional work, midway between the artist's early, indecorous scenes and his more sophisticated later works, typified by Halt of a Hunting Party (DPG78), which shares both the frieze-like arrangement of characters and a slightly skewed horizontal panorama.

  • Further Information: Wouwerman was an extraordinarily productive artist: more than a thousand paintings bear his name. However, only a small number are dated, making it difficult to establish a chronology of his work. Attribution issues also exist because a number of studio works and copies were made by his brother Pieter Wouwerman (1623–1682), whose painting Halt of Sportsmen (DPG 193) is also in the Dulwich’s collection. Wouwerman’s oeuvre consists predominantly of small paintings of equestrian subjects in landscapes, such as the present work. Despite the Italianate quality of much of his work, it is extremely unlikely that he ever travelled to Italy.
