This picture has been considered a companion piece to Halt of Cavaliers at an Inn (DPG77), due to their similar size and subject matter. However, the use of the 'PHILS. W' signature indicates that this picture was produced after 1646, after the other painting.
Stylistically this is a transitional work, midway between the artist's early, indecorous scenes and his more sophisticated later works, typified by Halt of a Hunting Party (DPG78), which shares both the frieze-like arrangement of characters and a slightly skewed horizontal panorama.
