Xu Beihong was born in Yixing, Jiangsu province. In 1916, he got his higher education at Aurora University in Shanghai, majoring in French, and then he worked as Art Director of Hardoon Garden and a professor of art at Mingzhi University. He travelled to Japan in 1917 to study arts for a short period. In 1919, he went to France and entered National School of Fine Arts in Paris, France ( École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris ). In 1927, he returned to his country and established South China Art Academy, and also he worked as a professor at Department of Art Education of Jiangsu University in Nanjing. In 1928, he became Dean of the College of Arts of Peking University, and later he began to teach at National Central University. In 1943, he established China Academy of Art. In 1946, he was appointed as Dean of National Beiping Art College. In 1949, he became Chairman of the Chinese Painters Association and Dean of China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1950.
