The two Belva Lockwood ribbons exhibited here were both worn at satirical Lockwood "Mother Hubbard" parades, where men, dressed in the "Hubbard" style of dress, would march down the center of town, often at night, ostensibly supporting Lockwood's campaign. The satire involved in the ribbon picturing a rather portly woman holding up a Lockwood sign is obvious, but that of the "Belva Lockwood Club" of Saratoga is far less so. Belva Lockwood clubs were organized throughout the country to mock Lockwood, and their public demonstrations were often rather elaborate, with men sometimes dressing up as Lockwood herself.
