Elsa Schiaparelli closed her London establishment in 1939. This knee-hugging jacket and dress likely originated shortly before this in 1938/39. It sports a short V-neck and mid-length sleeves with an accentuated shoulder. The bodice is laid in small folds at the waist. The flared skirt begins smooth at the waist and a box pleat incorporated at the front centre opens at the knee. The skirt falls bell-like in the back and is unlined. The likewise unlined jacket is worked loosely. It has a very short peplum, an angular, turndown collar and closes with a self-covered button at the waist. Dress and jacket are printed with a scattered pattern of small white bouquets in flowerpots. Some of these exhibit multicolour highlights and those on the small jacket additionally have sculptural embroidery. Small flower rosettes in yellow, pink, red and green are mounted on glass cylinders.
