Ludwig Meidner also depicted groups of devout Jews praying together and at worship services, as shown by this double portrait. But what distinguishes Meidner’s religious images from those of many other Jewish artists is the dearth of picturesque genre scenes. The world of the eastern European shtetl, which many painters saw as epitomizing Judaism, is absent, as are lavish representations of Jewish customs.
