Two views of Krakatoa

Two figures of the Krakatoa volcano after its 1883 eruption. Krakatoa, the island in the Sunda Strait, Indonesia, erupted in catastrophic explosions on 27 August 1883. Figure 1 shows the slopes around the peak of Rakata covered with pumice and ash, based upon a figure in Verbeek’s Atlas, 1883. Figure 2 shows the peak following washing by rain: based upon a figure in Verbeek’s Atlas, 1883 and a subsequent photograph of 1886. Plate 2 from The eruption of Krakatoa, and subsequent phenomena.
