Born in Freiburg, Germany, Holty moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as a baby. He painted this work while artist in residence at the University of Georgia, working with Lamar Dodd. His friend Romare Bearden called him "a master of the flat surface" and "a leading innovator of modern painting."
