Only two figures are visible in this painting now, but Vincent van Gogh initally painted four. The other two can been seen in the sketch he made after his painting and in the X-ray photograph of the work. Van Gogh possibly recalled the advice that Van der Weele had given him. He said to limit the number of figures in his composition.
