Smith Premier No. 2 typewriter. This model was introduced in 1894. There are two separate QWERTY keyboards, one for uppercase and one for lowercase letters, requiring typists to "shift" their hands to select the correct letters. Typewriters were an important communication device. With this technology, stenographers converted the notes that Susan B Anthony dictated into printed correspondence. (On loan from the collection of the Rochester Historical Society, Rochester, NY.)
