One of the largest carnivores ever to have walked the Earth, Tyrannosaurus rex lived 68 to 66 million years ago in North America in the Late Cretaceous Period. It was a member of the theropod group - dinosaurs that walked on two legs and ate flesh. T. rex probably hunted or scavenged alone, and required huge quantities of meat to sustain its bulky body. Its powerful jaw and saw-edged teeth were ideal for crushing bone and piercing flesh. Scientists believe it could eat more than 80 kilogrammes of meat in one bite. Its large head was balanced by a heavy tail and powerful legs, with arms so short they could not reach T. rex's mouth.
