That painting was commissioned in honor of Pergola Theatre’s re-opening, in 1828, by Accademia degli Immobili.
In order to celebrate national genius, the masterpiece shows “Petrarca’s Crowning”. The scene takes place in Campidoglio; an ancient Rome, crowded with buildings, temples and a windy hill marking the setting for a parade where musitians, allegories and simbols are sorrounding Petrarca, sitted on a float .
